An improved Jacob’s Staff
Anik Regan and I have developed an improved Jacob’s Staff that combines an iPhone app, 3D-printed parts, and a laser pointer. Tests with new and experienced students shows that it is much easier to use than a pocket transit (brunton) and is substantially more accurate. This is especially so in cases where the rock exposure is not in the direction of dip, where lateral sighting is required. The full description is in our upcoming paper in the Journal of Sedimentary Research: Holland, S.M., and A.K. Regan (2020). A new, more accurate, and easier to use Jacob’s Staff. The stl files needed for 3D printing the Jacob’s Staff are available in a zip file.
The iPhone app is available for free on the App Store.
